On May 20th, the American Foreign Policy Council convened the eighth installment of its Capitol Hill conference series on “Missile Defenses and American Security.” As in previous years, the event brought together leading national security and defense practitioners to examine the current state of the U.S. missile defense system, and ballistic missile threats to the United States. Speakers included: Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC); Lt. Gen. Henry Obering, former director of the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency; former NASA Associated Deputy Administrator Eric Sterner; former Acting Assistant Defense Secretary Frank Gaffney, and; former Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Robert Joseph.

In his remarks, Mr. Berman focused on the current state of Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and their implications for international security.

AFPC Vice President for Policy Ilan Berman was cited in Cliff May's August 14, 2008 syndicated column for the Scripps Howard News Service on Iran's interest in asymmetric military capabilities such as electromagnetic pulse.

On July 25-26th, AFPC Vice President for Policy Ilan Berman traveled to Dearborn, Michigan to participate in the Claremont Insitute’s 2008 conference on “Missile Defense Challenges for the 21st Century.”

On March 10, 2008, Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) addressed the American Foreign Policy Council's 2008 Capitol Hill conference on "Missile Defenses and American Security." Senator Kyl, one of the leading proponents of missile defense in Congress, discussed the current strategic challenges confronting the United States, and the role of Congress in mobilizing an effective response.
