Lawrence Haas cited in Business Week

Lawrence Haas, senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council in Washington, called the resolution negotiated with China and Russia a “Pyrrhic victory” for the Obama administration that will do little to achieve its aim of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

AFPC Hosts Senior Chinese Delegation in DC

From December 9-14, AFPC hosted a six person delegation of senior Chinese officials in Washington, DC. The delegation was led by Mr. Zhang Zhijun, Vice Minister of the CPC Central Committee’s International Department - a position roughly equivalent to an American Under Secretary of State.

 
AFPC Visits Twin Cities for Republican National Convention

From August 29 to September 5, AFPC hosted the Minnesota trip of three officials from the Chinese Association For International Understanding (CAFIU). The delegation’s participation in events surrounding the Republican Convention helped them evalute Sino-U.S. relations in a then-possible McCain Administration.

 
"China in Africa" Policy Brief Published

In early July, AFPC Fellow in Asia Studies Joshua Eisenman and former US Ambassador to Ethiopia David Shinn published an AFPC Policy Paper titled “Responding to China in Africa.” The twelve-page report, which has been distributed widely on Capitol Hill and within the Administration, serves as a predecessor and a summary to their book which is to be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2009.

 
AFPC and Heinrich Boell Foundation Host Capitol Hill "China in Africa" Conference
Conferences - April 29, 2008
 

On April 28th, 2008, AFPC and the Heinrich Boell Foundation co-sponsored a seminal conference on China’s expanding influence in Africa. The conference, entitled “Current Developments and Trends in China’s Relations with African Countries,” served as an opportunity for participants to review the policy findings and recommendations developed by AFPC Fellow in Asia Studies Joshua Eisenman and Ambassador David Shinn during their research study on China's relations with African countries. Their research will culminate in a co-authored book on China-Africa relations to be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.

 

 
Robert "Bud" McFarlane Heads AFPC Delegation To China

Between September 22-30, AFPC sponsored a ten person delegation to the People’s Republic of China. The group, led by former Reagan National Security Advisor Robert “Bud” McFarlane, included AFPC President Herman Pirchner, Pentagon Defense Science Board Chairman William Schnieder, former Senator Robert Kasten, Citibank Managing Director Kent Lucken, Stefan Halper of Cambridge University, AFPC Vice Presidents John Wobensmith and Ilan Berman, and AFPC Senior Fellow in Asia Studies Stephen Yates.
