On September 21, AFPC Kraemer Strategy Fellow Jeff M. Smith hosted the last mayor of Pakistan’s largest city and commercial capital, Karachi, at AFPC’s recently remodeled headquarters.

In early July, AFPC Fellow in Asia Studies Joshua Eisenman and former US Ambassador to Ethiopia David Shinn published an AFPC Policy Paper titled “Responding to China in Africa.” The twelve-page report, which has been distributed widely on Capitol Hill and within the Administration, serves as a predecessor and a summary to their book which is to be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2009.

From June 3-11, 2008, the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC) sponsored a five-person delegation to the People’s Republic of China. The group, led by General Peter Pace (USMC, ret.), former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States Armed Forces, included AFPC’s John Wobensmith and Ilan Berman, Paul Behrends, a principal at the law firm of Cromwell and Mooring, and Raymond Kellish, President and CEO of Blue Water Irrigation, Inc. During their eight day visit, delegation members held high-level meetings on military and strategic affairs with Party officials in Beijing, and visited China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region

On April 28^th, 2008, AFPC and the Heinrich Boell Foundation co-sponsored a seminal conference on China’s expanding influence in Africa. The conference, entitled “Current Developments and Trends in China’s Relations with African Countries,” served as an opportunity for participants to review the policy findings and recommendations developed by AFPC Fellow in Asia Studies Joshua Eisenman and Ambassador David Shinn during their research study on China's relations with African countries. Their research will culminate in a co-authored book on China-Africa relations to be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Since last year’s presidential crisis in Ukraine, the importance of U.S.-Ukrainian relations has taken on a new significance.  Not only is Ukraine delicately balanced between East and West it is also one of the five largest recipients of U.S. foreign aid.  Yet the country is too often considered only in the shadow of her Russian neighbor.

From October 9-17, 1999, AFPC conducted its sixth annual fact-finding mission to the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

As part of an ongoing AFPC-People’s Republic of China (PRC) exchange, a nine person delegation headed by Mr. Wan Guoquan, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), visited Washington, Philadelphia, and New York, August 21-29, 1998.

U.S. foreign policy officials recently had the occasion to hear about the strife in Bosnia-Herzegovina firsthand.  In January, two distinguished Bosnian leaders addressed congressional staffers about the ongoing struggles at an AFPC luncheon.
