Jeff Smith appeared on Voice of America Mandarin's Issues and Opinions one-hour program to discuss Sino-Indian tensions and the state visit to the U.S. of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

Between August 17th and 22nd, the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC) sponsored a 10-person delegation to Japan and South Korea led by the Honorable Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

On April 2, 2009 AFPC Research Fellow Jeff Smith was interviewed by Voice of America's Issues and Opinions Mandarin Service on the security situation in Pakistan, President Obama's new "Af-Pak" strategy, and China's role in South Asia.

From February 23 to March 3, 2009, AFPC sponsored a ten-person delegation to China led by Dr. William Schneider, Jr., former Undersecretary of State and current Chairman of the Pentagon's Defense Science Board.

The Fall 2008 issue of Demokratizatsiya, the scholarly journal of post-Soviet democratization, carried AFPC President Herman Pirchner”s 14 page article, “The Uncertain Future Sino-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century”.

From December 9-14, AFPC hosted a six person delegation of senior Chinese officials in Washington, DC. The delegation was led by Mr. Zhang Zhijun, Vice Minister of the CPC Central Committee’s International Department - a position roughly equivalent to an American Under Secretary of State.

From August 29 to September 5, AFPC hosted the Minnesota trip of three officials from the Chinese Association For International Understanding (CAFIU). The delegation’s participation in events surrounding the Republican Convention helped them evalute Sino-U.S. relations in a then-possible McCain Administration.

In early July, AFPC Fellow in Asia Studies Joshua Eisenman and former US Ambassador to Ethiopia David Shinn published an AFPC Policy Paper titled “Responding to China in Africa.” The twelve-page report, which has been distributed widely on Capitol Hill and within the Administration, serves as a predecessor and a summary to their book which is to be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2009.

From June 3-11, 2008, the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC) sponsored a five-person delegation to the People’s Republic of China. The group, led by General Peter Pace (USMC, ret.), former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States Armed Forces, included AFPC’s John Wobensmith and Ilan Berman, Paul Behrends, a principal at the law firm of Cromwell and Mooring, and Raymond Kellish, President and CEO of Blue Water Irrigation, Inc. During their eight day visit, delegation members held high-level meetings on military and strategic affairs with Party officials in Beijing, and visited China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region

On May 28th, AFPC arranged meetings for a delegation of officials from Hong Kong who came to the U.S. to study our election process in advance of helping to make electoral reforms in Hong Kong. Delegation leader Zheng Kunsheng (the number two official in Hong Kong) and his colleagues showed special interest in how campaign contributions are regulated in the US.
