Chinese Scholars Visit Washington on Fact-Finding Mission

Two Chinese scholars, Mr. Shi Huiye and Mr. Li Xiushan, arrived in Washington, D.C. on June 5, touching off a 10-day fact-finding mission.
Shi, a leading intellectual in the People’s Republic of China, has published 20 books and over 200 articles. Li is an international relations specialist.
They sought to gain first-hand knowledge of economic institutions and policy-making by examining the regulation of markets and competitive market mechanisms.
Key Issues in U.S.-China Relations
Shi and Li met with Amb. Richard McCormack, who discussed the impact of the Japanese economic crisis. The delegation members also touched upon significant political issues with Dr. William Schneider, a member of the congressionally mandated Commission to Assess the Ballistic Missile Threat to the
U.S.Lessons in Competition
In addition, Shi and Li looked at anti-trust enforcement with the chief of competition policy in the Justice Department’s Anti-Trust Division.
They also delved into U.S. efforts to increase business competitiveness in meetings with the:
Council Competitiveness;
Ctr. for International Private Enterprise;
U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and
World Council of Credit Unions
The delegation looked at market sector trends in talks with the:
National Association of Manufacturers;
America’s Community Bankers;
the Farm Bureau; and
EarthData International of Maryland
Shi and Li then traveled to New York where they met with Haven Capital Management and accompanied a broker on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.
