Joshua Eisenman
Fellow in Asia Studies

Joshua Eisenman is Fellow in Asia Studies at the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC) and is pursuing a Ph.D. in political science at UCLA. He is coeditor of China and the Developing World: Beijing's Strategy for the 21st Century (ME Sharpe 2007) and author of the book's chapter on China-Africa relations. He is currently collaborating with Ambassador David H. Shinn on a coauthored book on China-Africa relations; an effort that is already under advance contract with the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Mr. Eisenman received his MA in International Relations with specializations in China studies and international economics at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He speaks and reads Mandarin Chinese.

Prior to joining the AFPC, Mr. Eisenman worked for two and a half years as a professional policy analyst on the staff of the Congressionally mandated U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. He has also worked as Fellow at the New America Foundation, Assistant Director of China studies at The Nixon Center and has contracted work for Armitage International, L.C., the Brookings Institution, and the European Commission.
 
Since 2002, he has written over two dozen articles on China’s domestic development and foreign policy for a variety of publications including The Far Eastern Economic Review, Current History, the Asian Wall Street Journal, the Baltimore Sun and Newsday.
 
Mr. Eisenman has spoken on China's strategy towards Africa at numerous venues around the world including The Council on Foreign Relations, Harvard University, The Brookings Institution, Cornell University, the Carnegie Council, The American Enterprise Institute, The Heritage Foundation, the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, and the Asia Society in Hong Kong.
