On September 21, AFPC Kraemer Strategy Fellow Jeff M. Smith hosted the last mayor of Pakistan’s largest city and commercial capital, Karachi, at AFPC’s recently remodeled headquarters. Mayor Mustafa Kamal administered Karachi, the third most populous city in the world, from 2005 to 2010, at which point local elections were suspended in Pakistan. Hailing from the MQM, a secular political party opposed to the Islamist extremism, Mayor Kamal received international plaudits for his administrative reforms in Karachi. At AFPC he spoke at length about Pakistan’s crisis of governance and the violence that has swept Karachi over the past year. Among those in attendance for the discussion were staff from the State Department, Wall Street Journal, and House Select Committee on Intelligence.
