On March 7, AFPC Director for Asian Security Programs Jeff M. Smith hosted a Capitol Hill briefing entitled "The Appalling Ally" focusing on the dual threats of terrorism and nuclear proliferation emanating from Pakistan. Smith was joined on the panel by Dr. James Clad, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asia, and Amb. Robert Galucci, one of the country's foremost experts on nuclear weapons. Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX) offered introductory remarks at the special briefing for congressional staff. Rep. Poe currently chairs the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade, and has been a tireless critic of America's Pakistan policy, introducing legislation to label Pakistan a "State Sponsor of Terrorism."
