AFPC kicked off the summer by hosting a five-member Chinese delegation headed by CPC International Department Vice Minister Mr. Zhang Zhijun and Chinese Association for International Understanding (CAFIU) Senior Research Fellow Liao Dong.

The cornerstone of the delegation’s week in Washington was a highly animated meeting with Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Christopher Hill. The meeting covered a number of bilateral topics, a well as multilateral relations with third countries.

The delegation members also met with Dr. Michael Green at the National Security Council and with East Asia experts at Georgetown and George Washington universities. They likewise rounded the think tank circuit, visiting the Brookings Institution, the Center for Strategic and International studies, and the Atlantic Council.

While in Washington, the delegation also took time off from their busy schedule to tour landmarks such as the Smithsonian museums and the National Archives.

One of the trip’s most memorable highlights was an elegant dinner at La Brasserie on Capitol Hill. Filling the sunny garden with thought-provoking, substantive discussion were such honored guests as former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge and former House Speakers Newt Gingrich, as well as former Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Susan Neely, and former Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs Ambassadors Richard McCormack.

Having concluded a full program in Washington, the Chinese delegation moved on to Denver, CO, where they capped off their American visit with a meeting with Colorado Governor Bill Owens.
