On September 14, in our new conference room, AFPC hosted a dinner with former Secretary of the Navy, Amb. J. William Middendorf.
Amb. Middendorf discussed his latest book: Potomac Fever: A Memoir of Politics and Public Service. Secretary Middendorf worked in investment banking before dedicating his life to a prominent and lengthy career of government service. He previously served as ambassador to the Netherlands from 1969 to 1973, permanent representative to the Organization of American States from 1981-1985, and representative to the European Union from 1985-1987. Secretary Middendorf served briefly as Under Secretary of the Navy and then as Secretary of the Navy from 1974-1977. His political career began with his work for the presidential campaign of Senator Barry Goldwater in 1964, which is the subject of another book he authored, A Glorious Disaster. The Ambassador and AFPC President Herman Pirchner, Jr. were joined at the dinner by: veteran Capitol Hill staffer Howard Segermark, AFPC Board Member Dr. Christopher Manion and former NSC Director of Arms Control Sven Kraemer, as well as AFPC staff and interns. The group discussed the “Arab Spring,” the South China Sea and Russian politics, among other topics.
