AFPC recently hosted its annual Capitol Hill conference on “Missile Defenses and American Security.” Moderated by Director of Operations and Defense Technology Programs Rich Harrison, the event brought together Hill staffers, members of the defense community, and journalists to examine the latest trends in ballistic missile threats to the U.S. homeland, and evolving responses to them.

Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL), a former Navy Commander and current chairman of the Committee on Appropriations’ Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies, delivered the keynote address. Other speakers included Daniel Goure of the Lexington Institute, Michaela Dodge of the Heritage Foundation, AFPC Senior Fellow Peter Huessy, and William Schneider, former Under Secretary of State and current Department of Defense Science Board member.

Topics discussed included the lessons learned from Israel’s summer 2014 war with the Hamas terrorist organization, as well as the impact of new technologies and innovation on American deterrence capabilities. As in previous years, papers from the conference were published in the June edition of AFPC’s Defense Dossier e-journal, accessible and downloadable via our website at afpc.org.
