On April 19, AFPC Director of Asian Security Programs Jeff M. Smith and Senior China Fellow Dr. Joshua Eisenman hosted a roundtable discussion at AFPC’s Capitol Hill headquarters featuring Ambassador Derek Mitchell, who recently returned to Washington after serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Burma.

Ambassador Mitchell was instrumental in America’s outreach to Burma during the country’s recent transition to democracy. He served as the first U.S. Special Representative to Burma in 2011, a year after the ruling military junta allowed free elections to be held for the first time in decades. Over one dozen regional experts attended the talk, which focused on recent developments in U.S.-Burma relations, a progress report on Burma’s democratic transition, and Burmese views toward China.
