In September, AFPC Senior Vice President Ilan Berman traveled to Israel to take part in the 17th World Summit convened by the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya, Israel.

At the Summit, which ranks as the world’s leading gathering of counterterrorism professionals, Berman served as a speaker in a workshop dealing with the issue of terrorism and extremism in the Americas.

While in Israel, he held consultations with a range of Israeli scholars and officials to get their views on the current regional security environment, as well as on the state of bilateral relations between Israel and the United States. In his meetings, Berman encountered significant concerns about Iran’s growing presence and capabilities in Syria - a development that constitutes a major strategic threat to the Israeli state. He also encountered considerable optimism about the tenor of U.S.-Israeli ties, which Israeli officials believe have been reinvigorated with the advent of the Trump administration.

Finally, while in Israel, Berman was a featured speaker at a forum convened by Tel Aviv University’s Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies. There, he discussed the drivers of Russian strategy in the Middle East.
