These days, despite the hyper-partisan atmosphere in Washington, there still seem to be two issues that both Democrats and Republicans can agree on. One is the pervasive threat posed by the People’s Republic of China. The other is the overarching importance of space.
The United States Space Force was established due to rising threats in space, a domain that is vital to U.S. national security and economic interests. Since 2005, Congress has recognized that an asteroid impact represents a serious threat to national security. Though Congress tasked NASA to survey hazardous asteroids larger than 140m by 2020, sixteen years later it remains incomplete.
Space should not be seen as a bill to pay, but rather as an investment that generates tangible returns.
